WHY SHOULD I CHANGE JOBS?
No company is perfect. There are limits on internal mobility. Situations arise that cannot be overcome such as: poor management, cancelled projects, technical dead-ends, expected lay-offs, no growth and low profitability (as examples). We do not advocate job-hopping but a career should not suffer or stagnate for these and other reasons.
WHEN SHOULD I CHANGE JOBS?
The job market is expected to be the busiest from January through May when companies release budgets with the New Year. However, the market is active throughout the entire year and the right job can open at anytime. Come on to the market as soon as you are ready.
WHY USE A HEADHUNTER?
Lets look at the alternatives. (1) If a viable resume is posted on the Web, expect dozens of calls within twenty-four hours and be overwhelmed. Some second parties will distribute your resume without ever contacting you or asking your permission. (2) Having a friend at a company usually means limiting your exposure to those opportunities in that friends immediate area. A good Headhunter will help control the process to your benefit and should be able to provide access to a wide number of jobs within one company and across the board at many companies.
WHAT ARE MY OBLIGATIONS TO A HEADHUNTER?
First, our services are free to you because the companies pay us a fee. Our relationship with you is based upon trust. Return our phone calls or emails promptly. Be honest about all matters related to your job search. Follow through on promises such as going on interviews. Prepare, do your best and behave professionally when meeting with companies.
CAN I TRUST YOU WITH MY RESUME?
We will describe possible jobs with you and you decide which of those opportunities to pursue and where your resume will be sent. Your resume leaves our firm only with your permission.
WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS?
Our focus is multi-directional. Included is the financial industry because of their commitment to technology and the dynamic opportunities available. Since New York is a corporate center, we have clients that are leaders in a variety of industries such as information providers, product development, entertainment and communications, telecommunications, etc.
WHAT ABOUT DOT COMS?
Internet-based firms are experiencing an evolution and our goal is to find those companies that have a viable presence and can offer tremendous growth combined with substance and security.
HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I GET?
We understand you want to make as much money as possible and we do our best towards that goal. Companies have more to offer than just compensation and want you to see the added value in an opportunity.
WHAT ABOUT SIGN-ON BONUSES, GUARANTEED BONUSES AND STOCK OPTIONS?
Employers use bonuses as an incentive for productivity and the financial firms rely upon year-end bonuses as a major form of compensation. Guaranteed bonuses are not as common as in the past. Sign-on bonuses tend to be used as a way of equalizing disparate levels of compensation going from one company to another. Dot coms use stock options as an incentive because they have a limited revenue stream. It is another form of incentive, but more of a gamble.
HOW LONG DOES A JOB SEARCH TYPICALLY TAKE?
Companies can take anywhere from the same day and up to a couple weeks to respond to a resume. The actual interview process might involve 2 4 separate meetings spread over two to three weeks. Once an offer is extended, an answer is expected within several days. Starting from when the offer is official, companies do not expect anyone to start in less than two weeks, but are loathe to waiting longer than four weeks.
WILL COMPANIES PAY FOR RELOCATION?
Companies offer relocation expense on a case-by-case basis. The terms and coverage will vary. Be prepared to travel to the New York area several times for interviews and to start the job within several weeks of accepting an offer.
